Bank vs NBFC: Which Is More Likely to Approve Your Loan?

By Anurag Singh, authorized DSA partner

When people picture “getting a loan,” they usually picture a bank. But a huge share of the loans arranged in India today come from NBFCs — and knowing the difference can be the difference between an approval and a rejection. Here’s how the two actually compare, without the jargon.

What each one is

A bank takes deposits and lends money, under the full weight of banking regulation. An NBFC (Non-Banking Financial Company) is a registered financial company that lends but doesn’t hold a full banking licence — it can’t offer a regular savings account, but it very much can give you a loan. Registered NBFCs are regulated by the RBI; that registration is what separates a legitimate NBFC from a dubious “loan app,” so it’s always worth confirming (see how to spot a loan scam).

The practical differences that affect you

Approval criteria. Banks tend to be stricter and more standardised — a clean CIBIL score, well-documented income, a salaried job at a recognised employer. NBFCs are often more flexible on exactly these points, which is why they’re frequently the answer for self-employed borrowers, thinner credit files, or anyone who’s just been turned down by a bank.

Interest rates. As a rule of thumb, banks offer lower rates to the borrowers who qualify, while NBFCs price in the extra flexibility with a somewhat higher rate. That’s the trade — easier approval, slightly costlier money. For unsecured personal loans, rates across the market broadly range from about 10.5% to 24% a year depending on profile and lender (per lenders’ published rate cards); the stronger your profile, the closer to the lower end you’ll sit.

Speed. NBFCs are often faster to process and disburse, with lighter paperwork. When funds are needed quickly, that can matter as much as the rate.

So which should you go to?

It depends entirely on your profile — which is the honest, if slightly unsatisfying, answer:

  • Strong score, salaried, documents in order? A bank will usually give you the best rate. Start there.
  • Self-employed, thin ITR, or a weaker/blemished score? An NBFC is often far more likely to approve you — see personal loan for a low CIBIL score or business loan without collateral.
  • Turned down by a bank already? Don’t just try another bank branch — an NBFC may look at the same file completely differently.

An illustrative example. Say a salaried applicant with a 720 score and a clean record wants ₹6 lakh. A bank is likely the right first stop — best rate, and the profile fits. Now take a self-employed applicant, same amount, no formal ITR: a bank may hesitate, while an NBFC that reads bank-statement income is a much more realistic route. Same loan size, two different best-fit lenders. (Illustrative only.)

The point you don’t have to solve alone

Here’s the catch: you can’t easily see, from the outside, which bank or NBFC will treat your specific profile kindly. Every lender’s rulebook is private. Applying to several to find out just stacks up hard enquiries and dents your score.

That’s exactly the gap a DSA fills. We work across 90+ banks and NBFCs, so instead of you guessing, we match your profile to the lenders most likely to say yes — bank or NBFC, whichever genuinely fits. Tell us your situation and we’ll point you at the right door.

Common questions

Is an NBFC loan safe?

Yes, when the NBFC is registered with the RBI. Registered NBFCs are regulated lenders — the main practical differences from a bank are often a slightly higher interest rate in exchange for more flexible eligibility and faster processing. Always confirm the lender is RBI-registered before you borrow.

Why would a bank reject me but an NBFC approve me?

Banks generally apply stricter, more standardised criteria on credit score, income documentation and employment type. Many NBFCs are built to serve applicants who fall just outside those boxes — a thinner credit history, self-employment without a long ITR record — usually pricing that extra risk into a somewhat higher rate.
